The Wind River Range seemed like the ultimate wilderness experience, which it is! ...Except for one thing, mosquitoes in the summer. I thought mosquitoes in Malaysia were bad, but I was dead wrong, in the Wind River Range, they were vicious little bastards. They were everywhere, and they were there by the thousands and thousands. There wasn't any point to try and kill them, because they had friends everywhere. Every little chance they'd get, like the little 0.4 cm gap on the arm between gloves and the jacket sleeve, or the 0.6 cm space on the legs between the socks and the pants, you're open for donation.
For fun, I'd lit up my Whisperlite stove just to watch the spectacular fireworks display by the amazing kamikaze mosquitoes, only to get told off by my tent mates not to waste fuel. What party poopers.
The worst time of the day for me was about 4-5pm, everyday. It was my routine pooping session. The trick to pooping in mosquito infested area is 'preparation'. With your full head-to-toe protection (which includes headnets and gloves), stand above the cat hole that you've prepared. In a semi circle in front of you, prep the smooth river rocks (no toilet paper on courses!), deet and water. Focus on having the 'feeling' to poop. Focus it real good till the very last minute, then drop your pants, smear your butt cheeks with deet, and bombs away. Within a minute or two, clean yourself and pull up your pants. Only then you can take your time to feel relieved and start to breath again. Cover up that pile.
Even with the layers of cancerous application, you can still pick out which tent mate just pooped as they'd be scratching their bottom.
